If you, like me, ride a bike frequently for long distances, you will know that choosing a comfortable saddle is critical.  Having tried prettty much all of the popular (and some of the not so popular) designs over the last 25 years, I am pleased to share with you the most comfortable type of saddle that I have discovered: The SelleSMP SMP4Bike.

The basic premise is that the desing prevent squashing of the genital area.  You can read more about the science below.

A rigorous study of the benefits of the SMP4Bike saddle for long distance cyclists resulted in an article, authored by Breda, G. Piazza, N. Bernardi, V. Lunardon, E. Caruso, A. being published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine 2005, Vol 2; Number 5 pages 605 - 611

Development of a New Geometric Bicycle Saddle for the Maintenance of Genital-Perineal Vascular Perfusion The Authors - from the Department of Urology San Bassiano Hospital, Bassano del Grappa Department of Urology SS. Giovanni e Paolo Hospital, Venice; Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, San Bassiano Hospital, Bassano del Grappa - set out to identify a bicycle saddle model suitable for cyclists that cover long distances that is capable of limiting compression of the structures of the pelvic floor and, thus, protecting the blood perfusion of the penis and preventing possible consequences in erection.

An online company that has some lovely older images on their retro cycling jerseys is the retro image apparel company. Images used for their collection come from the images contained within the ‘Horton collection line’ these include such famous images as:

In the study, the SMP saddle is shown to be by far the most efficient in protecting the blood perfusion of the penis compared to one of the saddles most frequently used (at that time) by professional cyclists.
