Olympics - Women’s Road Race
There’s not much to say about the Women’s Road Race. I was disappointed that they didn’t broadcast the race live like they did the Men’s. (At least not at a time I could watch it). I was able to watch highlights of the race on NBC on Sunday.
Nicole Cooke of Great Britain took the Gold, while Sweden’s Emma Johansson came in second for the Silver and Tatiana Guderzo of Italy got Bronze.
The race was 78.5 miles as opposed to 150 miles for the men. It took just over 3 and one half hours to complete the race. Saturday’s Race was under clear and sunny skies. The ladies rode in the rain and had to splash through standing water on the roadways. There were at least four crashes during the race. One sent Karen Armstrong of the U.S. team out of contention when it happened during the final lap.
It was a disappointing day for America, as Kristin Armstrong came in with the highest U.S. position at number 25. Christine Thorburn was actually in first place for a short time but ended up at 52.
The next events will be on Wednesday, the 13th when the Individual Time Trials will be held for both men and women. We’ll be back on Wednesday.
So far, the number of metals in Cycling for America is zero. I am hoping for a better showing in the other events.
