Is Cycling A Remedy For Depression?
Cycling is one of those sports that many people learn at a very young age and then take for granted ever since. It is one of the most popular sports in the world and this is largely down to the fact there are styles and intensities to suit all types. Something that most people are unaware of though when it comes to bike riding, is that it has long been used as a method of fighting depression. Lets take a look at the reasons cycling can get you back to your happy self?
Outdoors. To start with, cycling is more often than not an outdoor activity. Research has proved that people recover much better when they are in open spaces and are meeting other people in the outside world. Add to this the fact that getting some sun is proven to make you feel happier and fresh air has a similar effect. Bikes are also a great deal easier to transport than other outdoor equipment such as surfboards or used kayaks.
Feeling better on the outside. The causes of depression are incredibly varied, although many people quickly start to follow a similar pattern. People tend to either comfort eat or neglect their appearance when suffering from depression and this usually makes things worse. Cycling in particular is one of the best sports to get your cardiovascular system working and reduce your fat percentage. As people start to feel happier with the way they look, their confidence returns and they start to feel better generally.
Endophines. When most people exercise they get a release of hormones that have a feel-good effect, known as endorphins. These little endorphins work to increase the amount of energy the body has, reduce feelings of anxiety and worry, and generally make you feel good. It is no wonder then that exercise is considered one of the most effective ways of beating depression. So if you’re feeling a bit low, buy a couple of second hand bikes and go for a ride with a friend or partner
