Finding Fitness In The Great Outdoors
If you want to feel fit and fantastic, you simply can’t beat the great outdoors. While it’s true that going to the gym is great for things like general physical fitness and muscle growth, many people get bored with gyms. They just feel there’s nothing natural about a gym workout and lose their motivation. That’s not the case, though, with outdoor fitness activities.
Of course, not everybody is fortunate enough to live close to a large park or a remote wilderness. Some people have to save their money until a vacation gives them the chance to get away from the city and back to nature. While they may not have the perfect environment for outdoor living, they can still get plenty of exercise outdoors, even if they live in the middle of the city.
Many people who live in the urban jungle or in the suburbs have discovered that bicycling is an ideal way to spend time outdoors. A Schwinn mountain bike, for instance, has enough gears to take you up the steepest hill in low gear and then peddle down in the highest gear. Today’s mountain bikes even have special disc brakes for flawless stopping power. You just can’t beat the feeling of conquering the hills on a mountain bike, even if you’re in the middle of the city.
Naturally, the downside of riding a bike in the city is that you always have to keep an eye on the traffic. There are dangers associated with riding offroad, too, but especially in the city, you’d be crazy not to wear a helmet.
Most bicycle fatalies are caused by head injuries. If you like black, buy a black helmet and if you like white or any color of the rainbow, get one of those. The color doesn’t matter, just the protection.
That’s as true for offroad as it is on the city streets. If you fall off a mountain bike at any speed, you can get a serious or even fatal head injury if you’re not wearing a helmet. If you’ve got a helmet, though, you can ride your mountain bike with abandon, knowing your head is safe.
If the idea of riding a mountain bicycle doesn’t grab you, there’s always hiking or rock climbing. If you take up either of these activities, your footwear is important. Hikers should wear sturdy boots with good soles for traction. Rock climbers wear specially designed shoes that cling to the foot and have sticky rubber soles for gripping the rocks on steep slopes.
For all around physical, mental and even emotional health, get outdoors. Don’t let anything stop you. You’ll love it.
